Fear and Loathing in the US

NOTE: This was an unpublished post that I wrote that I thought was good enough to push out.

One thing that’s will always be sure is there will be those who will use emotion and lack of knowledge to get what they want.  These are typically the most dispicable type of people there are.  Right now, it’s the anti-2nd admendment and gun control advocates.

One of the things that they are hoping to do is further erode our rights to own firearms.  And one way they are trying to do this is by the “Assault Weapons” ban.  But, how many people really know what an “Assault Weapon” is?

Unlike in 1994 when the Democrats first passed the “Assault Weapon” ban we now have lots of information available to the public about what is going on.  And theres plenty of people using the internet to try and send the information around.

One such article, is this one by a Liberal.  He does a fine job at describing what is going on, from a Liberal mind.  The point is, “Assault Weapon” is a term fabricated by the gun control crowd.  It’s not an actual term that is applied in the gun industry.  Let me put it this way:  There’s no such thing as an “Assault Weapon”.

What is the “Assault Weapon”?  It’s things that make a rifle look evil.  It has NOTHING to do with how a gun functions.  There’s the barrel shroud, the pistol grip, suppressors, and finally the magazine clip.  Banning these do nothing to make a gun safer or make them less likely to be used to kill someone.  Take a look at the article

Gun control advocates don’t care for truth

Let me be as blunt as possible.  Gun control advocates are liars, they only want to instill fear and want to move quickly while emotions run high.  Why?  First, it’s easy to ram through sweeping changes to our constitutionally protected rights while emotions are high.  Second, because the longer it takes, the more people come to their senses and realize exactly what I just said.

Recently President Obama gave a speech in which he talked about gun control.  Of course, he cited some study saying that 40% of gun purchases are purchases made without background checks.  He’s obviously targeting Gun show and private sales as the source of all our problems.  There’s just one problem, he’s lying.

John Lott at the National Review Online lays it out quite well:

Actually, the number reported was a bit lower, 36 percent, and as we will see the true number of guns “sold” without check is closer to 10 percent. More important, the number comes from a 251-person survey on gun sales two decades ago, early in the Clinton administration. More than three-quarters of the survey covered sales before the Brady Act instituted mandatory federal background checks on February 28, 1994. In addition, guns are not sold in the same way today that they were sold two decades ago.

So, not only is the President lying, but he’s using a 20 year old survey which some of the sales included sales before mandatory federal background checks.  Now, that’s not just being careless, that’s straight out deception.  Lott concludes that the actual number of sales of guns are more in the single digits.  Read the full article to understand why and to get access to the actual survey and get the numbers yourself.

“But wait!” you say?  “What about the effectiveness of background checks?  Obama said that they were wildly effective!”  Well, that’s more of a wild mischaracterization of the facts (or lie).  Here’s another interesting tidbit from the article:

Obama made many other false statements during his talk. He asserted that “over the last 14 years [background checks] kept 1.5 million of the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun.” But these were only “initial denials,” not people prevented from buying guns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms dropped over 94 percent of those “initial denials” after just preliminary reviews. Virtually all the remaining cases were dropped after further investigation by ATF field offices or the Department of Justice. Few of these “initial denials,” 62 people or about 0.1 percent, involved strong enough evidence to be consideration for prosecution. Just 13 pleaded guilty or were convicted.

So, from 1.5 million wrong people getting their hands on guns to 13.  Yeah, that’s crazy off there Prez.  Basically his whole argument for increased background checks is based on 20 year old surveys and mischaracterization of the facts.  Democrats love to fly lose with their facts.

Be careful when emotions are high.  Remember that the Liberals and Democrats will tend to “not waste a disaster”.
